In a Chișinău winter the real question is not what is still open, but what keeps you moving without freezing. Between November and March four categories work: indoor activity (interactive LED floor, bowling, escape rooms, trampoline parks, indoor pools), real winter outdoors in small doses (skating, sledding, the markets downtown), cold-season culture (theatre, opera, concerts, museums, cinema) and the slow option (spa, sauna, workshops, long dinners). Below are 15 ideas, each with the group it suits, a realistic duration and what you need to book ahead.

This guide is written from inside the cold season. Hai Pixel, the first interactive LED-floor venue in Chișinău, has been open since June 2026 in Grand Hall at bd. Constantin Negruzzi 2/4, second floor, and runs daily from 10:00 to 22:00. From December through February we hear the same sentence on almost every call: the kids, the teenagers and the adults all have energy to burn, and the city mostly offers places where you sit down. That is why the list below is ordered by how much you move, not by what it costs.

The short version: choose in 30 seconds

What actually changes from November to March

Daylight. In December it gets dark around 16:30, so anything that needs natural light (a walk, sledding, photos, a trip out of town) has to sit between 11:00 and 16:00. After 17:00 you are left with indoor activities and the ones that look good in the dark, like the lights downtown.

Snow. In Chișinău you cannot count on it: some winters bring two solid weeks of it, others swing between freeze and thaw and turn the parks to mud. The practical rule is to keep sledding as a bonus and an indoor plan as the base case.

The winter school holiday. From the second half of December to mid-January, demand for anything involving children rises visibly and weekends go first. Above ten people, booking on the day itself is luck rather than planning.

Indoor activity: the part winter takes away

In summer, movement happens by itself: parks, bikes, playgrounds, back yards. In winter that same energy has to go somewhere, or it turns into restless evenings and children who will not fall asleep.

1. An interactive LED-floor session

This is the only format of its kind in the city and the most active of the 15 ideas here: roughly 360 m² of pressure-sensitive floor, more than 30 movement games and a live score on the wall monitor. A round runs 2 to 3 minutes, so nobody stands on the sidelines. You play in socks in a heated hall, and the heavy coats stay at the entrance.

A session is booked for 2 to 24 players, for one hour or two. Floors are added automatically with headcount: up to 8 people play on one floor, 9 to 16 on two, 17 to 24 on three. Groups of 25 to 60 are arranged separately by phone. There is no age limit: in the same January week we host school classes, office teams and groups of adults.

Prices start at 300 MDL for two people for an hour in the weekday daytime slot, 400 MDL in the weekday evening slot and 440 MDL at the weekend. The full grid is further down and on the prices page.

The honest weakness: it is tiring. For most groups one hour is exactly right; the second hour makes sense for large groups playing in rotations, or for parties. It is not the place for a quiet evening of conversation.

2. Bowling, billiards or darts

The classic cold-evening format: it demands no fitness and leaves room to talk between turns. It suits 4 to 12 people best. In December, Friday and Saturday evenings fill up fast with company parties, so call a few days ahead. Prices are usually quoted on the phone and depend a lot on the venue.

3. An escape room

The city has several escape rooms between them offering a wide range of scenarios, most designed for 2 to 6 people per room and running about an hour. Warm, enclosed, and a good fit for a January evening. The drawback: a group of ten needs two rooms in parallel, and the experience splits into two separate stories.

4. A trampoline park or climbing wall

For school-age children and teenagers, a trampoline park partly replaces the playgrounds winter takes away. Indoor climbing works from school age up and has the advantage that a single child can do it without a group.

5. An indoor pool

One of the most frequently forgotten winter options. Indoor pools run all year, and for a child who cannot sit still an hour of swimming does what an afternoon of running around outside would.

Real winter, in small doses

The rule: at most one outdoor activity per day, no more than two hours, and something warm immediately afterwards.

6. Ice skating

From December to February temporary rinks appear in the central areas, while covered rinks run for a longer stretch. It is one of the few activities where adults and children are equally unsteady, which makes it good for dates and for mixed family groups. Skate rental is paid separately and rates change from season to season.

7. Sledding at Dendrariu or in Valea Morilor

When snow actually falls, the slopes at Dendrariu and around Valea Morilor are the classic answer. It is free, it is short (ninety minutes is the real limit for small children) and it is not planned in advance. The Botanical Garden and the Cathedral Park stay beautiful under snow too, but for walking rather than sledding.

8. The winter markets and the lit-up centre

From mid-December, the Great National Assembly Square and Ștefan cel Mare boulevard take on their seasonal version: lights, wooden stalls, hot food, music. It is not a full day out on its own, but it is the best half hour of atmosphere before or after something else.

Cold-season culture

Winter is in fact one of the best times of year for culture in Chișinău: the institutional season is in full swing.

9. Theatre and opera

The National Theatre, the National Opera and the city's other theatres play from autumn to early summer, with premieres concentrated in December and January and dedicated children's productions around the holidays. Tickets for the good titles sell out weeks ahead.

10. A classical or organ concert

The programme of the national music institutions gets denser over the holidays, with evenings of traditional music and carols. It is a strong option for an outing with parents or with visitors from abroad, and the short running time leaves room for dinner afterwards.

11. The national museums and temporary exhibitions

The National Art Museum and the National History Museum concentrate their temporary exhibitions in the cold season. For younger schoolchildren a museum alone rarely fills an afternoon, but it works very well as the first half of the day, followed by something physical.

12. Cinema

Obvious, but with one winter caveat: a film is a passive activity, exactly like a meal. Two passive activities back to back end the day early, so put something that burns energy before it.

Warm, slow and unscheduled

13. Spa, sauna or Turkish bath

Options run from neighbourhood complexes to hotel spas, at prices that vary a great deal by venue and by day, so it is worth calling around and comparing. The format works best for 2 to 8 people, and at weekends private saunas are booked ahead.

14. Workshops, cafes and long evenings

Winter is workshop season: ceramics, cooking, painting, chocolate. They run two or three hours and end with something you take home. For the simpler version, a cafe with board games solves a Sunday afternoon with no organising at all.

15. A full day at a national wine cellar

Cricova and Mileștii Mici remain among the most spectacular day trips near the city and, being underground, they do not depend on the weather. Book ahead and combine the trip with dinner in town on the way back. Schedules and rates are confirmed directly with them.

Winter with children

Children do not get worn out by the cold, they get worn out by a lack of movement followed by too many hours in the car and the mall. Splitting it by age helps.

  • Ages 3 to 6: classic play centres, children's pools, small museums. They run out of energy in about ninety minutes, so plan short and early.
  • Ages 7 to 12: the best-served age group in winter. Interactive LED floor, trampolines, skating, climbing, workshops. Any format with a score holds attention twice as long.
  • Teenagers: they want to come with their own group, not with the family. A format for 8 to 16 people where everyone plays at once solves more than any cultural programme.

For a whole day, the formula that works is movement in the morning, food at lunch, something quiet in the afternoon. The reverse almost never goes well.

What a session at Hai Pixel actually costs

These are the only prices we can confirm, because they are ours. The table is for one hour of play; a two-hour session costs 1.85 times the one-hour price.

161600 MDL2000 MDL2400 MDL
242200 MDL2700 MDL3300 MDL

The per-person price falls as the group grows: at 16 players on a weekend, an hour works out at 150 MDL per person, and at 24 players it comes to about 138 MDL. The weekday daytime slot is the cheapest, the obvious choice during the winter school holiday. Anti-slip socks cost 30 MDL and are yours to keep.

For birthdays there are three two-hour packages that include the LED floor plus a private celebration area, at one flat price on any day of the week: Party for up to 8 guests 3000 MDL, Grand Party for up to 16 guests 5000 MDL (hard cap 18, with 250 MDL for each guest above 16) and Festival for up to 50 guests 7000 MDL. There is no age limit: the packages are booked as often for adults and teenagers as for children. You can add snacks, pizza, a cake or an extra hour, and gift cards are available. Full details are on the birthday party page, and for office teams on the team building page.

A worked example: one Saturday in January

A family with two school-age children, minus five degrees outside and no usable snow.

  • 10:30: a late breakfast. Nobody should head out into the cold hungry.
  • 12:00: one hour of indoor movement. For four people, an hour at the weekend costs 880 MDL, plus 120 MDL if it is your first visit and you buy four pairs of anti-slip socks, so 1000 MDL in total.
  • 13:30: lunch. After an hour of running around, appetite settles the argument about where to eat on its own.
  • 15:00: the quiet part: a museum, a workshop, or simply going home. Most families overestimate what is left in the tank.
  • 17:00: if there is energy left, half an hour through the lit-up centre.

Three paid activities in a single winter day look good on paper and fail in reality. Two, with a meal in between, is the reasonable maximum.

Budget: small, medium, large

  • Small budget: a walk through the lit-up centre, the winter markets, one museum and coffee at home. Most of the day costs nothing.
  • Medium budget: a single paid activity of one or two hours plus a meal. For two people, an hour on the LED floor in the weekday daytime slot starts at 300 MDL.
  • Large budget: a day with two paid activities, one active and one slow, plus dinner. A large group or a birthday package also fits here, since the price is known in advance.

Five mistakes we see every winter

  1. Three activities in one day. Cold and travel burn more energy than the activities themselves.
  2. Booking at the last minute over the holidays. December weekends fill up days ahead, for almost any format.
  3. Dressing without layers. It is freezing outside and warm indoors. Half the group sweats and the other half freezes on the way home.
  4. Booking small children late in the evening. In winter tiredness arrives an hour earlier; for preschoolers the good window ends around 17:00.
  5. Building the plan on snow. Keep sledding as a bonus, never as the main event.

When we are not the right answer

An LED-floor session makes no sense if you want a quiet evening of conversation, if the group needs a full sit-down meal, or if most of the participants have knee or back problems. For children under four, some of the games are simply too fast. And if all you want is a calm hour on a bitterly cold day, a museum or a concert is genuinely the better answer.

Frequently asked questions

What can you do in a Chișinău winter with children when it is freezing?

Pick a single indoor activity with movement in it and put it before lunch: an interactive LED floor, a trampoline park, an indoor pool, or skating on a day without wind. Leave the afternoon for something quiet, a museum or a workshop.

How much does a session at Hai Pixel cost in winter?

The price does not change with the season. An hour for two people starts at 300 MDL in the weekday daytime slot, 400 MDL in the weekday evening slot and 440 MDL at the weekend. For larger groups the per-person price falls: 16 players at the weekend is 2400 MDL an hour, which is 150 MDL each. Anti-slip socks are 30 MDL.

How many people can play together at Hai Pixel?

A standard session is booked for 2 to 24 players. Up to 8 people play on one floor, 9 to 16 on two and 17 to 24 on three, so nobody queues. For groups of 25 to 60 we arrange a separate event by phone: +373 79 238 617.

Can you hold a birthday party in winter?

Yes, and winter is when the packages are in highest demand, because the outdoor alternative disappears. All three run two hours and cost the same on any day of the week: 3000 MDL for up to 8 guests, 5000 MDL for up to 16 and 7000 MDL for up to 50 guests. There is no age limit, and in December it is worth booking two or three weeks ahead.

What can you do in Chișinău in winter if there is no snow at all?

Only three of the 15 ideas depend on snow: sledding, partly the outdoor rinks, and the atmosphere at the winter markets. Everything else works identically in rain, dry frost or mud, which makes those the base plan rather than the backup.

What are the best winter date activities in Chișinău?

Skating, because being equally unsteady breaks the ice literally, an escape room for people who enjoy pressure, a short concert followed by dinner for the classic version, or an LED-floor session if you want something active. For a first date, choose a one-hour format.
