The rule most parents start from is simple: invite as many children as the birthday child's new age, plus one. Turning 4 means five guests; turning 6 means seven. It is a good starting point, not a law. The final list depends on the habits of the kindergarten group or school class, on the siblings who show up alongside the invitees, and on your budget. And the budget has clear thresholds: at Hai Pixel, birthday packages cover up to 8 guests (3000 MDL), up to 16 guests (5000 MDL, extendable to 18 at 250 MDL per extra child) and up to 50 guests (7000 MDL). The numbers 8, 16, 18 and 50 are precisely the points where one more "yes" changes your budget, so they are worth knowing before you write the invitations.

Hai Pixel, the first interactive LED-floor venue in Chișinău, opened in June 2026 in Grand Hall, 2/4 Constantin Negruzzi Blvd, 2nd floor. Its roughly 360 m² of step-sensitive floor runs more than 30 movement games in 2-3 minute rounds, and every party also gets a private celebration area. Week after week we watch good guest lists work and rushed ones wreck budgets or classroom friendships. This guide puts it all together: the basic rule, the etiquette of Moldovan kindergartens and schools, siblings, RSVPs and, above all, what each extra child actually costs.

The age-plus-one rule: your starting point

The rule says: number of guests = the age the child is turning, plus one. The logic behind it is about the birthday child's stamina, not arithmetic: a 3-year-old can barely handle three or four friends around them, while an 8-year-old keeps up with a group of nine without blinking. The rule grows the list together with the child and, at the younger ages, protects you from the classic scene of the birthday child crying, overwhelmed, in the middle of their own party.

Child's ageGuests by the rulePractical note
2-3 years3-4 childrenThe party is mostly for the parents; few kids, short programme
4 years5 childrenThe first party the child actually remembers
5 years6 childrenClear preferences appear: "I absolutely need X and Y there"
6 years7 childrenSchool transition age; the list may double for social reasons
7-8 years8-9 childrenThe child writes the list; the parent only referees
9 and olderthe child's chosen groupThe rule turns advisory; the real friend group matters

When is the rule worth breaking? We keep seeing three situations. First: the child joins a new group (new kindergarten class, first grade) and the party doubles as an integration event, so the list grows on purpose. Second: twins or siblings with close birthdays celebrating together, where the list is built per family, not per age. Third: the child's natural circle is smaller or larger than the rule says, and forcing the "correct" number would mean inviting kids they never play with, or cutting exactly the favourite friend. The rule is scaffolding, not a ceiling.

Rounds last 2-3 minutes, so every child gets back in constantly.

One detail matters especially with small numbers: the party format has to keep every child busy at the same time. At a festive table, four kids get bored fast; on a game floor, the same four kids run non-stop for two hours. That is why our honest recommendation is to pick the format first and lock the number second: an active format carries small lists and big ones equally well.

Do you invite the whole class or just a few friends?

This is where most parent friendships break, so let us say it plainly: you are under no obligation to invite the whole class. There is, however, an etiquette rule that kindergartens and schools in Chișinău follow almost universally, even though nobody writes it down: either you invite the entire group, or an obvious subgroup (only the girls, only the boys, only his table group), or fewer than half the class, in which case invitations are handed out discreetly, outside the classroom, through the parents. What is never done: handing out invitations in front of everyone and leaving three children without one. Those three remember, and their parents remember longer.

In kindergarten, the local norm leans towards "the whole group": small children do not yet have stable friendships, the teachers announce the birthday anyway, and the parents' Viber group makes any list transparent. In primary school the balance shifts gradually towards friend groups, and from around age 9-10 the child dictates the list, as they should. The useful question is not "what is proper" but "which children does the birthday child genuinely enjoy being around". If the answer is "the whole class", great. If it is "five kids", equally great.

The Festival package covers groups of up to 50 children.

Good news for the "whole group plus siblings" option: logistically, it is no longer a problem. The Festival package at Hai Pixel covers up to 50 guests at 7000 MDL, which works out to 140 MDL per child at full capacity, and the play space scales automatically: up to 8 children play on one floor, 9-16 on two, 17-24 on three floors in parallel. An entire class, siblings included, fits under the 50-guest cap in almost any school, and the short 2-3 minute rounds rotate teams fast enough that nobody waits on the sidelines. Being honest: if the list goes past 50, the package format is no longer the right fit; events for 25-60 people can also be arranged as a custom format by phone, but beyond 50 the conversation is necessarily about a tailored event, not a standard package.

What about siblings and parents who stay?

In Moldova, the question is not whether uninvited siblings will come, but how many. The local party culture is a family culture: the parent dropping off an invitee often has a younger sibling by the hand, and sending that child home is not a realistic option. So build the guest list with a sibling margin from the start: with 12 confirmed invitees, it is prudent to expect 14-15 children on the floor. The practical rule we recommend: count every child who will physically be there, including the birthday child and the siblings, because for space and budget what matters is who plays, not whose name was on an invitation.

The easiest way to avoid surprises is to state your policy right on the invitation, in one friendly sentence: "siblings are welcome, just tell us how many of you are coming" or, if the budget is tight, "play spots are limited, the party is for invitees". Both versions are socially accepted; what creates tension is silence followed by a refusal at the door. Parents who stay are the easy part: at a venue party, their presence does not touch your play budget, and at younger ages it is actually desirable that a few remain.

Children and parents posing together in the Hai Pixel party area
Parents can stay in the private area for the whole party.

At Hai Pixel, parents are welcome to stay: the private celebration area, included in every package, gives them a place of their own for the full two hours, and the team speaks Romanian, English and Russian, so grandparents and mixed-language families feel at home too. The one rule that applies to everyone who steps onto the floor, adults or children: play happens in socks, and anti-slip socks are sold on site for 30 MDL. Put the siblings' pairs on your list as well.

How many kids fit in each Hai Pixel package?

Once you have an approximate number, you can lay it directly onto the package grid. All three packages include the same core: two hours of party, access to the LED floor games and the private celebration area for cake and presents, at one flat price valid any day of the week, with no difference between Monday and Saturday. The packages have no age limit, so the same grid works at 5, at 12 or at 40 years old.

How to read the table in practice: the thresholds 8, 16 and 18 are where a list deserves trimming or, on the contrary, topping up. With 9 children confirmed you are paying the 16-guest package anyway, so seats 10-16 are already paid for: once past the threshold, invite more classmates, the cost is identical. Conversely, with 9 on the list of whom two are a "maybe", a disciplined list of 8 saves 2000 MDL. The full breakdown of what each package includes is on the birthday party page, and the up-to-date price grid, including plain 1-2 hour game sessions (2-24 players, no package), is on the prices page.

What does one extra guest really cost? A worked example

Let us put numbers on the most common scenario. Ana is turning 7. The age-plus-one list would be 8 children, but the class is close-knit, so her parents invite the extended friend group and land on 16 confirmations. Grand Party package: 5000 MDL, about 313 MDL per child. Simple so far. Then reality begins: a cousin confirms late (17 children), and a classmate asks whether his brother can come along (18). Each of those two children costs exactly 250 MDL extra, so the total climbs to 5500 MDL, the Grand Party ceiling.

Confirmed childrenPackageTotal to payCost of the last child
16Grand Party5000 MDLthe starting point
17Grand Party + 15250 MDL250 MDL
18Grand Party + 25500 MDL250 MDL
19Festival7000 MDL1500 MDL

The 19th child is the expensive one: at 19 confirmations there is no further extension, you move to the Festival package and that last "yes" costs 1500 MDL. This is not necessarily bad news, because Festival carries up to 50 guests, so once you are at 19, the rational move is to invite the rest of the class: seats 20 through 50 are already paid for. The takeaway is a golden rule we repeat to every parent: fix the list one or two seats below a threshold, not exactly on it. A list of 15-16 leaves room for the last-minute cousin; a list of exactly 18 means any surprise sibling pushes you 1500 MDL up.

Beyond that, the budget only grows by what you choose to add: cake, snacks, pizza, an extra hour of play, or the 30 MDL anti-slip socks for anyone who forgot theirs. There are no hidden fees tied to the number of parents or to siblings who only watch; you pay for the children who play, nothing else.

Invitations and RSVPs: getting answers on time

A good list dies without confirmations. The rhythm that works in practice: invitations go out 2-3 weeks ahead, the first reply deadline sits one week before the party, and you close the final count 2-3 days ahead, when you also confirm numbers with the venue. Earlier than three weeks, parents forget; later than one, weekend calendars are already full, especially in the crowded season of winter birthdays and the months before the summer break.

For chasing replies, the class parents' chat group is the standard tool in Chișinău, with one nuance: send the initial invitation individually (especially if you are not inviting everyone), and make the reminder individual too, short and reproach-free: "We'd love to see you Saturday, I'm closing the list on Thursday, could you tell me if you're coming?". Expect, mathematically, a few refusals and one or two people who never answer; that is why the below-threshold margin from the previous chapter is not pessimism but family statistics. Ask explicitly about siblings in the same message, so you do not discover them at the door.

The venue side is the easy part: at Hai Pixel you book online on the booking page in a few minutes, and you can adjust the final headcount by phone at +373 79 238 617 in the days before the party. The daily 10:00-22:00 schedule leaves room for morning formats for the little ones and evening ones for schoolkids. For the full preparation calendar, from theme to party day, see our 4-week party checklist.

When a small party beats a big one

Complete honesty, because it is more useful than any advertising: not every birthday needs a big list, and not every birthday needs a venue. Under age 3, the child will not remember the party and is often overwhelmed by noise and crowds; a meal at home with the grandparents and one family friend is the better choice, and the detailed comparison between options is in our guide on home versus venue parties. Likewise, if your child is sensitive to stimuli, the lights and music of a game hall can be too much; an after-school afternoon with three close friends beats any show.

The daily 10:00-22:00 schedule leaves room for evening parties too.

The opposite case exists too, where a small list is chosen out of inertia rather than preference: parents cut invitees to fit the living room, even though the child would have loved the whole crew. Here it helps to know that the difference in effort between 8 and 20 guests at a venue is close to zero for the parent: same cake, same two hours, a different figure on the bill. And for genuinely small groups there is the no-package option: a plain one or two hour game session, available for 2-24 players, plus cake at home. Concretely, one hour of play for 4 children costs 600 MDL on weekday daytimes and 880 MDL on weekends, so a mini-birthday of four friends stays well below the price of any package. Our 5.0 rating on Google came equally from parties of 6 children and parties of 40; the size of the list does not decide the outcome, the fit with the child does.

Frequently asked questions about guest counts

How many kids should I invite for a 5-year-old's party?

By the age-plus-one rule: six guests. At 5 the list still belongs to the parent, so the number genuinely works; if the kindergarten group is very close, or school integration is coming, extending to the whole group is just as legitimate. For budgeting, up to 8 children fit the 3000 MDL Party package.

Am I obliged to invite the whole class?

No. Etiquette only asks for coherence and discretion: either the entire group, or an obvious subgroup (the girls, the boys, his friend circle), or a short list invited discreetly through the parents, not via envelopes handed out in class. Uninvited children should not find out from classmates during break.

Do younger siblings count as guests?

If they step onto the floor and play, yes: for space and package purposes, every child present counts, not just those named on an invitation. Ask each family for their total number of children on the invitation, and keep a margin of 2-3 seats below the package threshold for surprise siblings.

What if more children confirm than I paid for?

Between 17 and 18 guests, the Grand Party package extends at 250 MDL per child, so two extras are no drama. From the 19th child you move to the 7000 MDL Festival package, which covers up to 50 guests. A phone call to +373 79 238 617 a few days ahead settles the switch without stress.

How far in advance should I send invitations?

2-3 weeks ahead, with a reply deadline one week before the party and a final count 2-3 days out. On busy weekends families plan early; an invitation sent three days ahead collects polite refusals, not guests.

Do parents stay at the party?

Whatever each family prefers. At younger ages it helps if a few stay; with schoolkids, many parents just drop off and pick up. At Hai Pixel parents have a place in the private area for the whole party, and the team speaks Romanian, English and Russian, so everyone is understood, grandparents included.

The bottom line: pick your number, then book

The decision takes four simple steps.

  1. Start from the age-plus-one rule and correct it against your child's real friend group.
  2. Decide the class policy: the whole group, an obvious subgroup or a short, discreet list.
  3. Add the sibling margin and stop 1-2 seats below a package threshold (8, 16 or 18).
  4. Send invitations 2-3 weeks ahead and close the count a few days before the party.

The rest is light logistics: you book online on the booking page, adjust the final number by phone and bring the cake. Hai Pixel is open daily 10:00-22:00 at 2/4 Constantin Negruzzi Blvd, 2nd floor, and if grandparents or godparents ask how they can contribute, gift cards exist too. Whether the final list has 6 children or 46, the goal stays the same: a birthday child who falls asleep tired, happy and convinced they had the best party in the class.
